Does anybody know of a one-piece z-bar that will work in place of the pontiac multiple piece z-bar on my 1972 Luxury LeMans? The original one has way too much play in it - I have all new reproduction parts installed.

I have not been able to find any cross references in the Hollander Interchange Manuals. Unfortunately they seldom get into the bits and pieces, just components.

I checked a 1969 Service Manual and see that full-sized Pontiacs and Firebirds have a one-piece countershaft. Why the Mid-sized and Grand Prixs have his sort of set up, I do not know, but it sure seems proned to loose and/or rattly situations. (see illustration below)

Perhaps it is to make up for engine tourqing, but then other cars would have the same problem, I would think (and don't). Is there a clearance situation here that needs the shaft to step-down? A simple bend would have solved that...

I have never heard anyone with a complaint about this before. Would tighter spring tensions help? Do you have the "anti-rattle spring" installed? Perhaps it also takes up some slop.

Have you thought about getting out the welder?! Or, I bet the racing equipment companies might have a stouter replacement item. Have you checked with Summit or Performance Years?

Please let us know what you learn in this investigation.
