Just a question maybe some one can answer. I have been seeing pictures of the luxary Lemans with coumn shift and bench seats. Mine has the bucket seats, console with floor shift auto, vinyl roof. Is this a normal Luxary Lemans?

Thanks

Steve

You don't mention if yours is a '73 or '74, but that shouldn't matter.

I am going to try to "back in" to your question with my answer. In checking through literature, sometimes it isn't what thay say as much as what they don't say.

While I could not find any mention of seats or shifters in my Pontiac books, I did notice how in a description of the Grand Am for 1974, it made special mention of the availability of floor-mounted shifter, console, and bucket seats as standard equipment-- but nothing so for the Luxury Lemans... if not standard, it must be optional.

Also, in a 1974 Owners Manual covering the Lemans series, all pictures and instructions are with column-mounted shifters (except for 4-speed option). There are, however, adjustment instructions for the bucket seats. But, there is no mention of consoles or floor shifters for the automatics.

All of this leads me to believe that the floor-mounted automatic shifter, console, and bucket seats are options. And, this is not unusual at all.

It is almost funny sometimes when you see something like a 1970 Bonneville described in the sales literature as "with 3-speed manual transmission standard".... right! Wouldn't you love to have one of those rare birds today?! The 3-speed column shift, and bench seats have always been the starting point from which to start adding on $$ for options. Starting with the column-mounted automatic, and then moving to floor shifter, and then buckets, and finally with console.

If the pictures you mention seeing are Pontiac ads or brochures, that wouldn't be unusual at all. But to see actual Luxury Lemans' with column shift and bench seat would be kind of rare. Most people ordering a "luxury" car went for the extras.

Strangest I have seen was a 1977 Can Am with bench seat and column-mounted auto shifter. I have even heard of some GTO with column shifts.

I hope this helps, and perhaps others have some more information too.

How about a column-shifted SD-455 Trans-Am? They were produced.

In 73 & 74 in the Lux LeMans the bucket seats you had to order floor shift with console. The only way you could delete the console was if you had a stick trans. All auto shift on the floor had to have a console because the console was what held the floor shifter in place. In any of the A-body cars you could get the floor shift & the column shift was the std. The 3 spd. column shifted trans was std. Then the optin was a 4 spd. then you got a column shifted auto. Then come the floor shifted auto with a console. Those were the choices you had. Also even with the engines you started with a inline 6 cyl. Then you moved to a 350 V-8, 2 of them . Then the 400 & you got 4 of those & then the top dog you got 1 of those. The 455 4 bbl. duel exhaust. The SD 455 never made it in to the A-body.

I forgot to mention the Lux LeMans could have 2 different roof lines to. It could come in the AD coup which was the LeMans with the large side window, & the AF coup, which had the Louvered smaller side windows. The lux LeMans was an option for the A-body line just as the GTO was. The leMans was the starting ground for entire line in 73 & 74 , 75 ,76 & 77. So even in 77 the Can Am was just an option on the LeMans too.
