Hello all.
I am new here and 2 Pontiac's and I really need some help!

I recently bought a 1970 Firebird that I am finishing cloning to a TA, mainly just in looks. {cant afford a real 70 T/A}. All of the T/A stuff came with car when I bought it.
I have been a gearhead my whole life, I have even done the unthinkable and remove B.O.P motors to run the all mighty SBC or BBC. I have since learned/got older and wiser Pontiac puts out more bang for the buck sorta say.

1} will 455 heads fit a 400?
2} do all pontiac 400 and 455 have distribitors in rear of motor?
3} is 1970 the only rear for this 12 bolt in my car or is it from something else?
4} will a 4 speed bellhousing from a 3.8 V-sick fit a 400 and be big enough to clear the flywheel? Basicly, are the 3.8 flywheel the same as 400? I know the answer if it was a chevy V8 and chevy V-sick.
5} are the fender verts differant from differant rears? I wanna make sure I have correct ones.
6} Can anyone give me a website to locate the #'s off my car? I am unsure what it origanly was.

Thanks in advance for all the help I hope to get.

A good friend will bail you out of jail. A true friend will be sitting in jail with you saying "damn that was fun"!

1. Yes. The 455 head will work on the 400. What casting block and head are you planning to run?

2. The 400 and 455 distributor are located in the back of the block.

3. The 12-bolt was exclusively offered in the 1970 T/A. Other T/As after that received the 10-bolt rearend. The 8.5 is actually a very strong rearend for street applications.

4. What transmission are you planning to run behind your 400? With the torque a Pontiac engine makes, I would be very selective on a gearbox.

5. Not clear on your question.

6. I would send the VIN to Pontiac Historical Services (PHS) to get it documented. It is a small fee for the info you will receive on your Pontiac.

Super,
Thanks for all that info. Its a big help.
The Block is a 1970 casting? Heads are 4x.? I believe.
So this rear end is from a trans am? Maybe my car isnt a clone and its a real T/A. That would be cool.
I have a munci out of a old camaro 70ish.? but I only have a sbc bell housings except for 1 I took off a 1979 Olds Starfire with a 3.8 in it. So that is why I was wonding the bell sizes. I wouldnt try that starfire 4 speed.
Yes, ?5 is a typo on my part. I was asking if fender vents where differant on differant years.
Also, I now know what PHS stands for. lol.

LArry, thanks for calling me on that typo. I still didnt catch it until you brought it up. Its kinda funny, cause I was thinking this "super" knows alot about pontiac's and to not know the fender vent ? was kinda strange. Oh well.
Thanks a bunch.

The 4X head is actually used a lot on Pontiacs. Got a fairly big combustion chamber, but that will work out with todays crappy fuel. I guess it was a very common head. I believe they were used on 1973 to 1974 400 and 455 engines.

The Muncie gearbox should work out pretty good behind the Pontiac. My buddy has always ran the Borgs-Warner Super T-10 with a lot of luck. He usually ran strong 455's with around 450 plus horsepower.

I would check out the casting numbers on the rearend. It is great you have the 12-bolt under your Pontiac. What gears are you running?

Wish I could help you out on the fender vents. Just don't know. I would think the 701/2 to 73 would definitely be the same. They probably work on other T/A years as well.

Good luck on your car.
