My oil pressure gauge on my 77 Trans Am pegs to the right side soon as turn the ignition switch and stays there until I shut her off. This started when I change the battery. I tried changing the sending unit thinking that was the problem but no fix. My oil level is good. Is there an easy fix that i'm overlooking or do I have to change the gauge itself?
Also would like to get opinion on aftermarket gauges. How difficult would it be to change over and what type or brand should be used?
thanks for your info

Boy, does this sound like it has something to do with the battery changing. But what? Was there any undue sparking or arcing when the battery was changed... just a guess. Were the poles reversed, even for a split second by mistake? Something that sent a "shock" of some sort to the gage??

A quick check of the '77 Service Manual shows a quick procedure to do some troubleshooting.
1) Disconnect the wire at the sending unit on the engine. With ignition on, gage should read past 80psi.
2) With ignition on, use a jumper wire to short the connector to ground. Gage should now read below zero.
3. If gage reads properly in steps 1 and 2, replace the sending unit. If it does not, the trouble is either in the gage or the wiring to the gage.

Let us know what happens with these checks. BTW, the oil level doesn't seem to be the problem here. Usually extreme gage readings like this are electrical in nature.
