Hi Mr. Fulper,

I know this is off the subject from the strong running Ventura you posted.

While browsing your Rock & Roll Engineering website, I stumbled across the Union Park SD Catalina you owned. I am a big fan of the '62 Pontiacs.

A few years ago in the winter, I went with a close friend to Indiana to purchase three "parts" cars from Randy Williams. There were two '62 hardtops and one '63 Tempest. My friend was only interested in the Catalinas, but Mr. Williams was very persistent for Ben to get the Tempest too. He kept telling Ben the Tempest was a special car. When we arrived at the Williams' home, we followed Randy and Scott Tiemann to a shop located towards Michigan.

Once we arrived at the shop, there were a few Pontiacs that really stood out from the rest. There was an original '69 GTO Judge (wearing its original paint and resting on a set of Keystone classic wheels) and a 1962 Catalina with a black paint job. Being a big fan of '62's, I quickly checked out the car. Mr. Williams told me it was an original SD car. WOW!!

We picked up the two '62 parts cars that day (one was a 38,000 original mile Texas car and the other was owned by an elderly couple in Indiana - the cars were used for interior pieces and misc. chrome). There was also the '63 Tempest. The car was disassembled completely. Randy said it had only 7,000 original miles. Apparently the previous owners ran a 421 SD in it and drag raced it. Wonder if this car has any historical significance? It is obviously not an original SD car, but maybe it was pieced together to race in the days. I would really like to find out more.

I currently have the '63 Tempest. I did some trading to get it from my friend. I would like to have gotten either one of the '62 Catalinas. Oh well, I really like the '63 Tempest too.

How long did you own the '62 Mr. Fulper? Did you run an 421 SD in it? Man, these are cool cars.

Also, how is your '63 Tempest coming along Mr. Fulper?

Bruce,

Although you only had the '62 for a year, I bet it was a feeling like nothing else in this world.

When I saw the car at Randy's building, it had no engine or trans and was on a set of stock steel wheels with whitewall tires. It had the 405 H.P. on the front fenders and some racing decals on the rocker panels. I will try to post the pictures I snapped of the car.

I remember it was cold when we picked up the three cars. Clear in Indiana, but there was a ton of snow towards Michigan.

Did Scott have a chance to restore the car for Randy before he passed away? I would love to be able to see the car again. I realize some of these special cars are lost forever once they get in the hands of certain collectors. I always appreciated the fact that Randy would display his cars ocassionally. The world lost a special person when Randy passed away.

I feel very fortunate to have been given the priviledge to photograph Randy's collection of Super Duty cars. His wife, Jean, allowed me to take pictures of his personal collection. Something I will hold close to me for a lifetime. As I had stated earlier, I have always been fascinated with the '62 Catalina - especially the rare SD cars. Randy's collection was second to none.

I am sure your business allows very little time for you to enjoy your cars. I know your hardwork has earned you a good reputation in the Pontiac world. I specifically remember years ago when I started attending a lot of Pontiac races. The DMac 1964 Pontiac you built an engine for was impressive!!! I remember that car blowing the doors off everything it match-raced. I have several pictures of that car. Beautiful!! I remember it at Cordova, IL, Arkansas City, Kansas and many other racetracks.

What type of Super Stocker are you going to build Bruce? Is it going to be based off a Firebird again? It absolutely amazes me how fast your last car was. Considering all the rules applied to these types of racecars, it is a big personal accomplishment. Cubic inches, weight, ... heck - everything!

Well, maybe your old SD car will pop up at a event this year. I look forward to seeing these aluminum lightweight warriors.

I am going to try and post a picture of the '62 as I saw it at Randy's garage. Hope it works.

Hi Bruce,

Were you going to run another 400 for a powerplant in the new NHRA car?

Have you ran an SD 455 in NHRA competition before? I would imagine it would be a very potent engine. I feel the SD 455 is a work of art. Too bad they were unable to produce more of these in production cars.

I have an interior shot and a few others of your old '62. It is an impressive car. Hopefully it will show again in the public eye.

I would imagine Randy had big plans for the car before he passed away. I have a lot of respect for Randy. The man accomplished a lot in his life. Between Randy's ultimate collection of parts and Scott's restoration skills, it is hard to match the quality of Randy's SD cars.

Hope to see Scott this summer maybe. Norwalk might be the best place to run across him. I am going to take your advise and see if he knows anything about the '63 Tempest I now own.

I would like to build the car similar to the one my dad ran in the 70's. Kind of a tribute car. I got the Pontiac bug honest!

Good luck on the Pontiac projects.

Here is a picture of the '63 my father ran in the 1970's. I like the nostalgia look.

Have to ignore the picture title. It is a 1963 business coupe Tempest. Equipped with an aluminum frontend.

Hope you can run quicker than 9.60's too. The SD-455 should have tons of potential. I cant't believe the one fella can't get his SD in the 9's. Must be a bad combination of a lot of things (workmanship, machine work, etc.)

Is your new racecar going to be around 3000 lbs? When you add cubic inches, does the NHRA require you to add weight? I guess if they do, at least you can put it in a better location to balance the weight distribution.

Wonder what the H.O. Racing 1974 SD-455 T/A ran in the days. I have seen pictures of the car, but never any times slips. These cars are tanks. They tip the scalesat nearly 4000lb. Not exactly light.

Good luck on the racing adventures Bruce. Good luck with the '63 Tempest too.

My dad actually just removed the inner headlights and put a piece of plexiglass in it. I always liked the way it looked. In fact, my first '63 Tempest street car I did the same thing with. I will probably do with my new Tempest too.
