I probably have a copy of the article somewhere. I try to hang on to as many Pontiac articles as possible.


Off the subject from myths of the traditional Pontiac V-8, what are some of the best casting blocks to use for serious race applications? The most common problem we had on some engines was the lifter bore breaking.

We were running a very radical roller cam in our Pontiac. We had this happen to an early model 455 block and a 428 block as well. We got our '65 Tempest running 6.10's in the eighth and 9.60's in the quarter.

Nothing like beating up big block Chebbies. Most of the people that got their doors blown off would come over and check to see what kind of engine we were running. PONTIAC OF COURSE!!

This is a back-half car that still retains the stock front suspension. A fiberglass front clip is the only lightweight components on the car. We run a Turbo 400 and Ford 9" rear with 4:30 street gears.

It is a lot of fun for us.

Bruce,

What do you think about the weld-in style braces? Will they distort the block badly or make the lifter bore weak?

How much for the unit you sell?

Thank you for your honest answer. There is a lot of bad info out there and I guess this is where the market tries to jump in. I did not like the idea of welding on the block. Seemed risky to me and a good way to screw things up.

I will pass the word on to my good friend Scott. Talk him in to purchasing one for a little extra insurance on his engine. My other friend Lee is one of those lucky fellas that has an SD-455 block. This is what he runs most of the time in his '63 Tempest. This car has ran 9's on alcohol with a little wilder combination. On gas with a milder combination, it generally runs 10.50's.

I might just pick one up for Scott and tell him this is the way to go. We can go from there.

Thanks again Bruce. Hey, I was going to ask you about the Tempest wagon you ran before. What kind of drivetrain did you run in it and what kind of times did it produce? Always been a fan of the '63 Tempest/Lemans.

Jealousy and bad business practices can ruin many things. Too bad people can not be more open-minded about things. Heck, I think it would be wise for them to open their eyes and learn something.

Pretty darn impressive making near 700 horsepower with 350 cubic inches. Wow!! Did you have an article on this build up too Bruce? If so, I would like to show my dad. I know it would impress the hell out of him. He is big on great machine work and finding the perfect combination.

I have tons of old magazines I aquired over the years from many people. They got tired of packing them around so I kinda inherited a bunch of em'. It is fun going through them and finding these good articles.

The best thing of all is that these are the motors an average guy can still find. The 400 and 455 engines are harder and harder to come by.

The wagon was very impressive too. Sounds like a guy could drive it on the street all day and click off 11's at ease.

I found an ad of your '82 Firebird last night in one of my High Performance Pontiac magazines(July 2004). It was a comp cams ad. Very impressive wheelstand! This is the only brand camshaft my father pretty much runs in anything. He has had a lot of success with them.
