1969 Convertible Catalina

PostPosted: Fri Sep 20, 2013 3:25 pm    Post subject: New member with 1969 Catalina Convertible Reply with quote

I am the new owner of this '69 has been repainted over the years, and the original color has been changed from Vedoro Green to an attractive blue. I plan to have the car repainted soon and want to keep it as original as possible, as I am somewhat of a purist. The green was not an attractive color. Would love to hear viewpoints about whether I should return it to its original color. I am considering repainting it a proper 1969 Pontiac blue, but am not sure whether this is heresy or not. Thank-you

I think the only "heresy" in hobby car ownership is NOT having it the way you will enjoy it the most.

Now if you were restoring a rare mega-dollar car for show or investment, that might be a different story. As is also the case of when someone chops up a solid original all steel '32 Ford roadster to make a hot rod-- plenty of fiberglass stuff to accomplish that!

Bottom line is that many cars have been modified to the owner's desires, and personally that is what it is all about. As for something as minor as changing the color-- go for it. You're right, the blue is much nicer than the green. For cool cars, "it's not easy being green" to quote Kermit. That green looked nice on the Firebirds and A-bodies, but was a bit too much on the full-sized cars.

Your idea of selecting an actual factory blue will even get you past most purists out there too. Most consider that a forgivable sin.

Now, about the car. You have a very hard to find Pontiac. It seems like very few survived, much less a convertible. Protect the nose though. Those are very hard to find or repair.

If you would send some photos and a story about you and your Pontiac(s), we would love to do a "Cover" Feature in our On-Line Magazine on such a nice car.

Larry, thank-you for that valuable information. I sure didn't want to paint it green. As to the nose, it is good, no chunks missing, thank goodness. Of course the paint has cracked on it, and the blue shade appears to be dull and darker. I have found information on how to properly restore it so hopefully we will be able to return it to it's original look. Thanks for the offer for a cover feature. Please give me a while to get all that together and I will take you up on the offer.

For the nose repairs, I understand that a good flexible repair material and flex agent in the paint and you are good to go. Lots more of that available today (compared to 1969) since all the rubber and plastic on the cars now.

If you ever need a new nose, there is a company that has reproduced them in fiberglass. While not the same (by touch) it has saved a lot of broken nosed '69s over the years.

Keep us posted on your progress.
