1969 TransAm

PostPosted: Thu Jan 21, 2010 7:40 pm    Post subject: 69 TransAm Restoration Question Reply with quote

I am rebuilding a 69 Trans Am back to original. I am getting conflicting ideas about the paint used originally. First, was the paint Tyrol Blue or Lucerne Blue? Secondly, should the racing stripe go over the rear spoiler, under or both to be "correct". I have been doing a lot of research and have found it both ways but never a definitive answer.
Any help with this issue would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

You would think that Pontiac literature would be chocked full of mention of the colors of such a unique car... NOT!

However, a quick Google search of "1969 Trans Am colors" produces a lot of reading material. But like opinions... everbody has one, and in one place you see someone swear that the white was Cameo White, and in another it is refereed to as Polar White. The stripes seem to be agreed on as Tyrol Blue. A Service Bulletin #546 321 was referenced.

There seems to be a very comprehensive restoration guild called the "Original Pontiac Firebird and Trans Am 1967-2002- The Restorers Guide" by Jim Schild. Check it out at: http://books.google.com/books?id=leyn4SoNUJYC&pg=PA29&lpg=PA29&dq=1969+trans+am+colors&source=bl&ots=38zbEkNZzq&sig=ebHa6z8pNnI8Cm7Roc_BgdeMafw&hl=en&ei=kBZZS6T3CJ-ltgfyw5i1BA&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=7&ved=0CCEQ6AEwBjgK#v=onepage&q=1969%20trans%20am%20colors&f=false

Perhaps it is available for purchase in the auto hobby book market.

Please let us know what you find out.

For stripe placement check the photo from Phoenix Graphix below. They would be a great source for questions too, as well as Stencils and Stripes--both companies give our Pontiacregistry.com great discounts too.

Just got back from the Mecum Auction in Orlando and got this shot of a 1969 Trans Am.

It indicated that it was restored, but it sure had a bunch of small flaws on it. However, of interest is that the stripes go under the spoiler. Also note that the spolier posts are painted blue too.

Saw "another" one that was the same. I say "another" because we couldn't tell if it was the same one that had been moved. There were WAY too many cars there to keep track of.

In an original ad I have, the 1969 Trans Am definitley had the stripes continue on top of the spoiler. I have seen some TA's with the stripe on top of the spoiler and others without. Seems like all the true TA's all have the stripe painted on top of spoiler.

The stripes also continue under the spoiler too. Spoiler stands were blue also.

This might be the ad that Super is referring to. It sure shows the stripes over the spoiler.

You can see an even larger version in our "Vintage Ads" section of the "Just For Fun" forum.

Sure would like to know the "real" answer here. There sure seem to be a lot of high-buck T/As floating around that are wrong if this is how they are supposed to be.

This raises another question. Not having any experence with these cars, and seeing graphics for sale for the stripes, are they painted on or applied (i.e. decals)? The one I checked at the auction appeared to be painted on... at least I couldn't feel a raised area along the edge of the blue.

New member here. I know this is a rather old thread, however, I have seen these questions debated for as long as I have owned my TRUE 69 TA. The 2 page ad shows a pre production TA. The red ram air decal on the hood scoop was not used and the Firebird emblem on the front fenders was not used on the Trans Am. The spoiler stripe issue is one of 3 possible ways. Over the spoiler, none on the spoiler, and none on the spoiler with the pedestals blue.

I bought my TA in 1981 from the original owner, who really used it as a family car. My family has permission to sell it when I am dead! It is a RAIII with A/T. Deluxe blue interior, and rear fold down seat, which I added. Production was September 1969. I have found many oddities due to the late production date, such as the grilles are argent vice black, the carburetor is a RA IV spec. Car was originally purchased in Norfolk VA.

I am the original owner of a 69 trans am. I drove it off of the showroom floor in 1969. There are no stripes on the spoiler. My understanding is that there were various combinations made; simply luck of the draw!
