Trying to find out if the engine in my 70 Lemans is the original or not. So far it is looking like not. The only number I have been able to find so far does not match the car's vin. I can't read the whole thing, but the last 3 numbers are 633, and that isn't even close.
I found a picture showing 2 locations for the vin stamp on the block. It shows one as being '65 and up, and the other being '67 and up(vertically along the timing cover . The 65 and up is where mine is, horizontal just under the head on the passenger side. So does this mean my engine is a 65 or 66, or could the vin be in either location from 67 and up?
The code under the vin (?) number is YU the best I can tell. Definitely a Y, and pretty sure it is a U.
If needed I can post a link to the reference picture, but it is on another forum so I won't do it unless asked to.
Thanks,

ok, more confusion.
found a similar discussion by googling, there a person was saying that the number I am seeing is the engine production number, and that to see the vin by the timing cover it might take a mirror or worse.
I give up for the night. I am going to have to try to see the date code on the block to see what year I am dealing with it looks like.
augggghhhh.

Go to this article in our On-Line Magazine for help: http://www.pontiacregistry.com/members/online_magazine.php?view=1&article=243
The info that will be most helpfull is the following:
"So, the best rule of thumb is to look around the front of the right bank,
near the head-to-block split. For 1964 to 1970 there will be two pads with numbers. The top one is the engine production number, similar to your car VIN, containing car info and production sequence number. The
bottom pad is the engine production code as shown in the chart below. For most other later years this is also the place to look for your block code." _________________ PontiacRegistry.com... building the single largest source of Pontiac information, services, and entertainment in the world! |

Thanks. Is there anywhere that shows a breakdown of the production number? Like what part is the vin and what is the sequence?
I really appreciate the help. I am just getting frustrated since there is so much conflicting info around(like the year one site having the Tempest Custom in the 1970 model year production. )
I never had this issue with Mustangs. Ford didn't start using the vin on parts (except for high end cars like Shelbys) until into the 70's. Saying "numbers matching" is a way to find out if the other person has a clue or not about vintage mustangs.

For most later Pontiacs the VIN decodes as follows:
1st symbol= 2 (Pontiac)
2nd & 3rd= series (35= Lemans, other series are different numbers)
4th & 5th= body style (I think yours was a "37" for 2-door hardtop. Check Style numbers under "Pontiac Information" at top of page)
6th= year ("0"= 1970)
7th= letter for plant built at (A= Atlanta, GA; B= Baltimore, MD; C= South Gate, CA; E= Linden, NJ; G= Framingham, MA; L= Van Nuys, CA; N= Norwood, OH; P= Pontiac, MI;R= Arlington, TX; X= kansas City, KS; Z= Freemont, CA; 1= Oshawa, Canada; 2= St. Therese, Canada
LAST NUMBERS= production sequence at factory built at and start with 100001. So whatever ypur last numbers are, subtract 100001 from it to find when in the run your car was built.
Hope this helps. _________________ PontiacRegistry.com... building the single largest source of Pontiac information, services, and entertainment in the world! |

Thanks, but I guess I should have clarified.
I was specifically talking about the production number on the engine block. It sounds like from reading various places that there is more than just the partial vin making that number up, and that was what I was thinking about in my head( a lousy place to be recently) when I posted the question.
Gee, you mean you aren't a mind reader?

The number above the engine code is called the Engine Unit Number or Motor Unit Number.
It will have no correlation to the VIN.
The partial VIN, at least for your engine, will be down lower by the timing cover.
Try my page:
Engine Unit Number
The partial VIN will look like this:
20N123456
the 2 is for Pontiac
the 0 is for the year (1970 here)
the N is for the plant (N-Norwood here)
the 6 digits of the VIN on the car.
