One of the most asked questions about someone's Pontiac is decoding the Body Plate. The body number plate identifies the model, year, car division, series, style, body assembly plant, body number, trim combinations, paint code, date build code, and something called the modular seat code (whatever that is, but it is indicated as being for "GMAD only").
On all bodies except the "X" body, this plate is located on the upper horizontal surface of the shroud. On "X" bodies, the plate is located on the vertical surface of the shroud.
Now before panicing, these sample plates are from a manual that covers all 1975 GM bodies, so some of the numbers or letters shown will not apply to your Pontiac. To find your style number check under "Pontiac Information"-- "Pontiac Style Numbers" on this site.
For Assembly Plants, the follow codes apply for Pontiac: A- Lakewood, GA; B- Baltimore, MD; C- South Gate, CA; D- Doraville, GA; E- Linden, NJ; G- Farmingham, MA; J- Janesville, WI; K- Leeds, MO; L- Van Nuys, CA; M- Lansing, MI; N- Norwood, OH; P- Pontiac, MI; Q- Detroit, MI; R- Arlington, TX; S- St. Louis, MO; T-Terrytown, NY; U- Lordstown, OH; W- Willow Run, MI; X- Fairfax, KS; Y- Wilmington, DE; Z- Fremont, CA; 1- Oshawa, Ontario; 2- Ste. Therese, Quebec; 3- Detroit, MI; 4- Scarborough, Ontario; 5- Memphis, TN; 6- Oklahoma City, OK.
For more on Paint Codes, see elsewhere in this section of Technical Articles for a listing of colors and their paint codes. |
