The 1940 Pontiac was the first year that Pontiac used the “sealed beam” headlight system; and, although still only 6-volts, it was a vast improvement over the previous bulb and reflector systems.

In this new arrangement there was used a rubber seal that went inside of the headlight door (rim) to keep dirt and grime out of the headlight bucket. It also kept the water out of the bucket where it would eventually find its way into the electrical socket corroding the contacts. It essentially sealed the rim to the lamp. This is an often overlooked item in a restoration, as “Who can really see it anyway?” Well, you’d be surprised the gap that shows when it is missing.

As with any rubber product, these seals fell victim to the ravages of time and the elements, often crumbling when removed, or missing completely. Additionally, there were small spring clips which held this seal into the rim, and they were often lost, or rusted away.

Good luck finding these items as NOS. And, if you do, there is no guarantee they won’t be a brittle as a pretzel. Well, look no more. At least in the Pontiac bins. Rather make a trip to your local Harley-Davidson dealer’s parts department.

I don’t remember the bike model I found these parts on, but believe there are plenty of Harleys still sporting big bucket headlamps, and if not, Harley is great about stocking lots of parts for the older models. You will find that the Harley rubber seal and spring clips work perfectly on your 1940 Pontiac headlight rims. The spring clips are a bit different in size (either a bit wider or narrower, I don’t recall), but what he heck, “Who can really see it anyway?” Additionally, the rubber will keep the water and dirt out of your headlight buckets.

These clips were used on earlier models also, but in a slightly different way (they didn’t have the same seal). And, I would imagine that the same seals and clips were used through the rest of the early '40s and perhaps through the late-'40s also. If anyone can advise, please let us know.
