Below are the books I've bought, but I can't seem to figure out the system for finding a specific part number. For instance, I've been looking for several options such as power windows and cruise control, and a replacement Rally Gauge cluster with tachometer. The Pontiac illustrations catalog does not show the part number. While the parts catalog is a list of parts/numbers, but there seems to be several options for the same year and part. Same with the Fischer and red Pontiac Service and Assembly manuals.
Then I find a few pages from a Mitchell Manual that the original owner must have given me. That seems to be the ticket. Illustrations have A, B, C, etc. from each part in the exploded view, then the associated part name and number right there. But the few pages I have are limited to body and chassis parts that would be damaged in an accident. Not optional equipment like power seats
I haven't spent time with the manuals, just glanced through them. Do I have what I need, or is there a different "magic book" with exploded view, part names and numbers all in one place that I need to chase down?

As someone who began his technical career as a technical illustrator, it grinds my gears at how difficult it can be to find parts information in Pontiac (and most other) parts manuals. I cannot think of any other sources than what you have already. As one point, you will not find any magic number covering things like power windows as that is made up of many parts and not considered an "assembly." Probably the same for some of the gauges/cluster you are wishing. It may take a lot of study time, maybe item by item, to figure out what is what. But that said, having part numbers probably won't help much in locating parts as these items are harder and harder to find every day, especially any NOS stuff. As a shot in the dark, there were numerous Service Bulletins on many items that may spell out some of these items... but then again, where do you find those, and what is the chance of a specific coverage...? Are we having fun yet?!? _________________ PontiacRegistry.com... building the single largest source of Pontiac information, services, and entertainment in the world! |

Hi Larry. You got that right. From first glance, it looks like the parts shown in the illustrations catalog give a reference number (like 4.70) which I think I'm supposed to look up in the associated chapter in the parts catalog. WTH. Why not just give the part number? That's where I thought I saw multiple part numbers for the same item and year.
I'm not necessarily expecting to find new or NOS parts so much as wanting to know correct part numbers for to verify any used/salvaged parts I may run across. I might not have been clear. I understand that most items like 'power windows' or the 'rally gauge cluster' won't have a single part number, I'm trying to figure out how to find individual part numbers in such assemblies. For instance, the previous owner of my 73 GA replaced the optional tach that he ordered with the car with an aftermarket after the original stopped working. I have a separate green gauge cluster rear shell, and an original tach, but don't know if rear shell is for a tach cluster or clock.
Thanks for your help. |

You're right about illustration ref. numbers... they take you to a listing of a boat load of years, items, etc. that sometimes are clear as mud.
As for part numbers of individual assemblies, I do not know where those may have ever been available outside of the factory or outside suppliers. _________________ PontiacRegistry.com... building the single largest source of Pontiac information, services, and entertainment in the world! |
