No many occasions I get asked about finding shock absorbers for the older Pontiacs. In my case with my '40 Pontiac (as with many of the older cars), it is the rear telescoping tube shocks that are needed. Many years ago when I first restored the car, I went to a Sears Auto Center shock display and matched up a shock by size and mounting type (diameter, length compressed and extended). The last time (about three years ago) I called Gabriel who has a Tech Support line: 1-800-999-3903. Really nice people!

They were able to match my shock size needed perfectly (#81318) and I was able to buy them at a local Advance Auto store. Well, I found I need some extra lift now and called to see if they could match that new shock to an air shock... and they did! I am going to go shopping for #49311 soon- maybe my Christmas present to myself!

As a note to anyone looking to do the same on their '40 Pontiac or so, the only think I have ever had to do to use these modern shocks is to shave the thickness of the top rubber bushing a small amount to fit in the "groove" in the top frame cross rail.

Hope this helps others.

Adding to Larry's post regarding shock resources, Gabriel produces a CLASSIC line of modern replacement gas charged shocks for most 1950s era Pontiacs. ROCK AUTO offers the best prices and lists most shocks that are a correct fit for your fifty's era Pontiac cars. I found that gas shocks will firm-up the handling.
