I just bought a 66 GTO and knew it did not have the original engine; however I found an old insurance card in the car from the second owner who owned it for 40 years. Luckily I was able to contact him and talk about the cars history, unbelievably during the conversation he told me he still has the original engine in his barn and he sent me pics of the casting numbers. Everything matches the car as far as 66 GTO 9778789 and WT, but I have seen conflicting information about the engine serial number stamped above the WT. Most sites say the six digit number is the sequential engine number and one site said it should match the last six of the vin. So that is my question, does anyone know for sure? I also read there may be a vin # stamped where the timing cover and oil pan meet on passenger side. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

We have some articles about engine identification in our On-Line Magazine in the Technical data section.

Below are a couple shots from one of the articles. These should cinch whether the block is correct or not.

The VIN on the block is supposed to match the VIN of the car, but I am not certain of if all the numbers are there. Give us the numbers you are concerned about and I'm sure we can decipher them for you.

Sorry it has been so long, but I just made the deal and bought the engine last week. The number above the WT is 31406.
