1951 Deluxe Chieftain

1951 Chieftain-- I will have to replace the drive pinion oil seal. There is some leakage at the seal but I think I can easily make it to Warwick RI tomorrow but I'll bring the tools and oil just in case. Anyway, I'm wondering if anyone has had experience with this change and might have any insights as to what particularly might be some things to look out for. I did note in the manual that the torque for the pinion nut is critical.
Also, even though the manual states that it is unnecessary to change the gear oil I'm wondering if after 50,000 miles and 70 years it would be necessary to change it? Was the original oil actually whale oil or was that not available in the viscosity needed for the differential?

We sure hope you make it here with no difficulty.

You are correct on the torque of the rear pinion nut. I'm not certain on the '51, but many pinions have a "crush" that must be torqued to a specific amount for the bearing, which probably must happen even when just the seal is replaced. I'm in Warwick now and don't have my manual handy.

As long as you're going to be working on the rear end, changing the oil/grease might be a good idea. There are a number of different weights but I have usually used like a 90 weight.

Steve Peluso is here, now, so if you can find him, he will have every answer you need. He has his blue '67 GP convertible here.
