Took the 1940 for a test run up my private road! Pressed brake pedal and went to the floor. Brake fluid everywhere. I could not tell where exact leak was. Removed cylinder and still could not tell. Ordered now master cylinder and am now ready to install. Could the leak have come from the distribution block where brake lines attached? Could it have leaked at the actuator arm in the distribution block? Hate to install to find I need to replace this also.

I guess this sounds too easy to ask, but where did you see the fluid coming out at?

If can't tell from first mishap, add some fluid and have someone gently depress the pedal while you scout around. If at either distribution block (front or rear) that is far enough away from the master cylinder to not mistake that leak for the master cylinder. Also check hoses and fittings at all brakes. And dripping from inside the drums (leaking wheel cylinders).

Now, all that being said, if you actually don't have fluid squirting all over the place, it would be have to be internal failure (bypassing) internally in the master cylinder.

Question: what is "the actuator arm in the distribution block"? Never heard of such a thing. See schematic below.

Well, I'll be darned!! You have a hill holder on your master cylinder. Better stated a Lockheed "NoRol" device.

While it may be interesting, it is probably hardly worth the extra effort of trying to get it to work properly. Even if the clutch parts are there...?

Just get rid of that part and come right out of the end of the master cylinder as normally done.

Now, if that is the cause of the brakes failing, I do not know. Did you ever find signs of fluid escaping? If not, it is internal to the master cylinder. There are many kits available, but be sure the inside bore is not pitted. They can be resleeved, but new ones aren't too costly. You will just have to then be sure the input rod is adjusted properly to keep the brakes from locking up after application. That is never fun... been there, done that. Drive a few miles and have solid brakes. Wait 15 minutes and drive back home to futz with it again.
