Cable from emergency brake was disconnected just behind the transmission. Upon reassemble the clevis and mounting hole is about 11/2 inches space. How do I close this gap? How is spring pulling on the cable mounted. is there a dog of this?
Thanks, Glenn

I don't quite follow your description, but below is an illustration from the Shop Manual. It is like the setup on my '40 Pontiac. I hope it helps.

Note that the triangle shaped part that the cable passes through has holes to move it forward or back to adjust the tension. The spring hooks onto the cross part of the frame to the rear.

The only thing I notice different from the illustration is that my car had two (one for each cable side) little pieces that had slots on each end to hook a cable with "ball" on the end into. This allows you to hook the two assemblies going to the brakes onto a separate piece of cable looping forward and through the "triangle" shaped piece. When the cars were new, they probably had a single length of cable for the entire thing. But, I'm sure, as they aged, or cables stretched or broke new separate cables were made.

Hope this helps.

You can buy these "cable hook" items (see below). You can also make your own cable by going to Ace Hardware of some place similar and look in their garage door cable section. Buy as much cable as you need and a couple of the "slugs" that you crimp on the ends for hooking the cables up.

BTW, I wanted to replace the two assemblies going to the brake backing plates and was able to find a near perfect match with some late-model Chevy items on Rock Auto. They give them by length, so you can shop/buy exactly to the size you need. It only took a small amount of work to revise the two clips that hold the forward end of these cables to the frame of the car to make them work (no welding, or anything more than a little grinding and filing). I would recommend replacing these as if you have the old ones, the cables are probably very brittle and stretched.

The new cables mentioned above are: 1975 Nova Dorman #106 C92400 "Parking Brake Cable."

Larry, thanks for the quick reply. The picture of the assembly answers my question. The rectangular piece that connects to the cable clevis and the triangular piece is missing. I need to find it or make a replacement. Obviously it was installed when I started work on replacing the engine with a rebuilt same. I will let you know result. Other option is to purchase this piece although not likely.
Best, Glenn

A quick eBay search didn't turn up anything. But it would be easy to make. It is two plates that are separated by three spacers. A hope for the pin and three holes to adjust the spring.

I believe the two back spacers have a "dished-out" look for the cable to ride in but I don't think that would be necessary. Unless you could fine two very small pulleys.

I did find the piece needed. I placed it on the frame close to where it was removed. Did this so I could easily find it later. Unfortunately I went brain dead and forgot. Reassembly went OK and brake works well.
Thanks for the pic as this did refresh my memory.
Best, Glenn

Glad it helped. You're not alone when it comes to loosing track of stuff during processes like these.

I replied to your leaking brake question. Reposted the same schematic as here (forgot I shared it before), but have a question on "the actuator arm in the distribution block" that you mentioned.
