1964 Bonneville

PostPosted: Sat Jun 01, 2019 5:59 am    Post subject: Bonneville for canadian market or not Reply with quote

Hi guys!

Is there a way to find out if my 1964 Pontiac Bonneville conv. was made for the canadian market or the american market?
When I bought the car from the dealer he said it had been in Canada, and it was also shipped from there. The reason i am wondering is that I am trying to find new drum brake wheel cylinders.
Greatful for all help.
Thanks Smile

No U.S. built cars were "made for the Canadian market." That does not mean it wasn't built in the U.S. (where all Bonnevilles were built) and sold and shipped to Canada though. There are LOTS of U.S. cars in Canada.

If it is all Pontiac- engine, etc.- then it is a U.S. built car. If it was all Chevy drivetrain it would be a Canadian built car... it would also be a Parisienne.

Your parts should be all Pontiac items. The VIN will state where the car was built (in the U.S.). Send and we will decode it for you.

Check here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pontiac_Parisienne

Thanks for answering, Larry.

I'm pretty sure it's made in U.S. VIN.nr is 884L29750.

I think it's all Pontiac engine and drivetrain

I have to change the drum brake wheel cylinders, so i was searching for parts when I found out it was different cylinders for cars made for the canadian market. See the attached picture.

I have never seen any reference before for Canadian (or any other country) manufacture. All I can think is that whoever that company is, they are making sure nobody buys Pontiac parts for a Canadian built (all Chevy drivetrain, brakes, and suspension) Pontiac.

In doubt, I always call the company to double check that they don't know something we don't know (though I doubt it).

Your VIN confirms U.S. built.
8= V8
8= Bonneville
4= 1964
L= Linden, New Jersey built
29750= number of car built at that plant (stated at 1,001 and includes all models of Pontiacs (not just Bonneville)

Feel 100% safe to order Pontiac wheel cylinders from all shown here.

Thanks, Larry.
Here is the company: https://www.brakepartsinc.com/raybestos/catalog-part-search.html

Is there a place to enter VIN no. to find out what equipment the car was delivered with when it was new?

Only the build sheet will show the info you want, in addition to the actual window sticker too. Pontiac Historical Services might be ably to supply (costs $$). However, I do not know if they have their services completed that far back. Look on-line and see what they offer.

It was quite expensive but they said they had everything for my car.
Here in Norway I can go to the DMV and ask them to check the archives for all the history registered on a car. Is this possible in the U.S?

Another question, between my front and rear windows there is a rubber strip. I can't find this on ebay or other places cause I don't know what it is called. Do you have a name for it? :p

Unfortunately the U.S MVDs won't release any information for privacy reasons.

The strips you need we usually just call them window wiper strips. See the attached from the Parts Manual.

Perhaps Ames Performance Engineering may have them. They have been building a large inventory of the big Pontiac car parts over the recent years.

Thanks again, Larry Very Happy

Do you have part no. on drumbrake hardware kits too?
Again I struggle to find the right parts. The ones I find at the dealers are only for Safari, not for Base.

I'm sure Rich at CPR will have all the brake parts you need. See his ad upper right: California Pontiac Restoration.

I have already tried clicking on his ad. His website does not work. I get this message: Service Unavailable.
Do you get the same?

That's weird. I got the same thing. Has to be on their end. Try calling them at: 714-245-9800.

I bet Kanter in New Jersey would have what you need too. They offer lots of mechanical parts.

You can also try Northwestern Auto Supply in Grand Rapids, MI at: http://northwesternautosupply.com/ They have tons of older car parts.
