I need to test my starter before trying to bring my old straight eight to life. I tried to have O'Reilly and Autozone test it but their machines don't go back that far. I would really like to rebuild it if I can find the correct parts. Any help would be appreciated. Thank, AJ

Those old starters are pretty bulletproof. Have you hooked it up to a battery yet? Even a 12 volt will be OK for a quick test. Negative to the case and touch the big battery lead on the solenoid with the positive. If it doesn't click the solenoid, that can be taken apart and the contacts cleaned with sand paper.

Rebuilding, even if working, is a good idea. I'm sure Kurt Kelsey Pontiac Parts will have everything you need, or certainly a place like Kanter's will. Also try Northwestern Auto Parts in Grand Rapids, Michigan (http://northwesternautosupply.com/). Also CPR- see ad to the right should have all you need.

If you have an electrical motor repair shop nearby they can also do things like check the windings and probably clean the commutator. If not, the commutator can be dressed with some fine sand paper and the grooves cleaned with a sharp object.

Thank you very much for the info. We pulled it apart today and found the brushes looked good, we cleaned the armature and a couple of the springs were broken. I think we found parts for that but need the selanoid. I will research the sources you suggested. Thanks, I'm sure I'll need your help again before I get this old 8 running again.

You didn't mention what year your Pontiac was, but check the attached pdf file. It is from the 1949-54 Pontiac Shop Manual.
