Congratulations on a great old Pontiac!

Most all the older Pontiacs (like yours) had the VIN located (stamped) on the top of the driver's side frame rail ahead of the steering gear. However, my '40's was actually slightly rear of the steering box. Regardless, it will be in that area.

Be careful cleaning it off as some (like mine) weren't stamped very bold (deep).

For cars built in Michigan, the number will begin with 6CA-1001 and end with 6CA-154827. Those built in Southgate, CA had a prefix of "C" and those built in Linden, NJ had a prefix of "L."

Don't panic if you have a title that does not match these numbers (as happened with my '40). Often times DMVs didn't know where to find these numbers when a car was re-registered, so they grabbed the engine number which was more easily seen on the front left corner of the block. Titles often stated "VIN or Engine Number.

Good luck. Keep in touch.
