Hello,

We just purchased a 1955 Star Chief and I have some questions.

There are two types of hood ornaments: clear and orange. How did Pontiac determine which to use? Is it exterior color-based? Our exterior is painted the original colors of Polo White/Driftwood Beige.

Does anybody know where I can find the "Pontiac Strato Streak" valve cover inserts? I've read that only one is needed, and that is for the passenger side.

The interior is all original and is need of a total restoration. The restored 55s that I've seen have all eliminated the polished aluminum-looking door panels. Are they obsolete?

Some 55s have the stand-alone air cleaner, while others have the "silencer" attached. Are both systems oil bath systems? What determined which went into what vehicle?

Thanks for any info that you can pass along. I'm sure I'll have more questions as I go along...

John

Congratulations on a great old Pontiac.

I have only found the info on the hood ornament to indicate the lucite chief head to be an accessory item and available in clear or amber. Perhaps some accessory literature will elaborate on which and how.

I would suggest asking the Hood Ornament Expert, Wally Harris about this matter. he has written books about mascots. He can be reached at: wally93@buckeye-express.com

As for the air cleaner question, see the attached below from the 1955 Service Manual.

As for the engine designation on the passenger side valve cover, I never paid much attention to that. However, the attached Service Manual picture seems to bear that out. Click on the photo after you open it to blow it up. Don't know who has them... are they decals?

Don't know about the door panels.

Update: We have contacted SMS (out of Oregon) to create new door panels. The word that I got was that they are the best anywhere. The downside is that it could take up to a year to get the finished product.

The valve cover inserts are alumium, and I cannot find one anywhere. We have removed the paint from ours and I am getting ready to clean it with aluminum cleaner and polish. I have seen them in cars painted the valve cover color, and with black lettering. I have also seen them unpainted with black lettering. We are going to go with the unpainted and try painting the letters black. Hopefully, it will turn out ok.

We got engine paint from Hirsch, but it looks pretty dark. Maybe it will lighten up a bit after it dries. Regardless, I think that we will go with their paint.

That's all for now.

This may seem like a lot to go through, but check here:

They even have You Tube clips of using their products.
