What is the correct gear oil for a 1965 Catalina Muncie M20 I'm using gm syncromesh oil with a GL3. The car was originally a TH400. I rebuilt the Muncie before installation. The trans is a little winney. I think I should be using a 80W/90W GL4. I just installed a 3.55 rear with posi and after 400 miles it started banging like the clutches would not release when making a turn. I filled it with 80W/90W GL5 and a bottle of GM Friction Modifier. When I drained it the oil looked OK it a very small amount of metal flakes but I think that was just normal break in. Is there any reason why I cant use a synthetic blend 80W/90W GL5 and a couple bottles of Friction Modifier.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

There are tons of people in different forums with the same questions as you have. Most will agree that the 80-90 as you use (and I would too) is the perfect one for the trans and rear end.

As far as the trans whinny, I would guess if you rebuilt it, new gears would be pretty sharp edged and might make some noise until they wear in a bit. Although you didn't mention if it was when shifting, especially downshifting. That would indicate some synchro noise due to wear.

Some mention that the rear end should NOT have additive put in. Now I have used it with no problem, and don't think it would hurt. I do see mention that only authentic Ford or GM posi additives be used as the off the shelf box store stuff is no good....?

It sounds odd that the rear would start making noise after 400 miles. I've had some small success with additive in a pretty tired posi. I have heard many people say that you need two cans of the additive. I would sure try that first.

Keep us posed on your results.
