1951 Deluxe Chieftain

PostPosted: Wed Mar 08, 2017 4:57 pm    Post subject: 1951 clock interchange Reply with quote

My 1951 Chieftain has a non working clock. I've been in touch with a gentleman in Ohio (I'm in MA) who has a working clock that has a date of March 1954 stamped on the back. My question is since the back of the original clock for my car has a domed back and the one I'm looking at has a flat back, would I be able to use the newer clock? I believe that the 1953/1954 cars were also 6VDC so it only becomes a fitment problem. I know I am able to remove the working part of the clock from the casing for my clock, would I be able to simply interchange the works from one casing to another? I would prefer that method as the casing that I have is in pristine condition.

If Larry is reading this I'd like to let you know that Steve Peluso has done some magnificent work on my car and it is now running better than ever. He said that he knows you well.

The Pontiac clock placement was pretty much the same for quite a few years. But, like most things that SEEM like they are the same, all it takes is one little thing to throw a monkey wrench into the interchange plans.

What I would do is search the internet for clocks and see if the years are bracketed the same... as in "1951-1954." That would give you s good idea of if they are interchangeable.

If the fellow with the '54 clock would be willing, ask him for some good photos and dimensions. An 1/8 off in, for example, the diameter and it's a nix.

As an alternative idea, what about having your original clock repaired? There are places that do that, as well as places that will convert them to modern movement while still looking original. And, yes, through 1954 was still 6-volt.

Glad Steve got you going well. If there's one thing he knows, it's his Pontiacs! Oh, yea, and old TV theme song lyrics!
