I just purchased a 1964 Catalina 2 door hardtop from across the country. It only has about 21k miles on it (or so I'm told but I think it's accurate) and had been sitting for 30+ years in a garage. The guy I bought it from purchased it from an estate and did some work to get it running then sold it to me. I had it shipped to me and it really runs pretty good but I noticed the second day that it's leaking transmission fluid. I took it to a local transmission shop and they said the front seal is leaking and gave me a price of $1100 to replace all the seals. That seemed awfully high to me but I don't have much to compare it to. I just wondered what others thought about whether the price was fair or if I should look elsewhere. Thanks for any help you could give me. _________________ Greg Stock

It would seem to me that they are pretty much going to rebuild the transmission, if they are changing all the seals. And if not, they should check everything else while inside of it. That said, it is pretty much a grand+ to rebuild any automatic transmission.
A word of caution though. Those are very unique transmissions, and few around today are familiar with them. I have seen too many "regular" transmission shops make the old transmissions worse after futzing with them.
I strongly suggest you contact our Automatic Transmission Tech Adviser, Steve Peluso. He is an expert in these older units. You will find his phone number listed in our Tech Adviser listing under the "MEMBERS" drop-down. _________________ PontiacRegistry.com... building the single largest source of Pontiac information, services, and entertainment in the world! |

Thanks, I will try to call him tomorrow. The quoted $1100 price was just to replace the external seals, no rebuilding of the transmission at all. If it was a rebuild, I probably wouldn't have questioned it. I went to a car show yesterday though and spoke to a guy I know who does a lot of muscle car restoration and he told me he doesn't send his transmission work there anymore because they aren't good with older cars. He gave me another place about 20 miles away but I definitely want to talk to Steve before I make my next move. Thanks for the help! _________________ Greg Stock

Hi
I had the front seal replaced in my 1964 GP Roto Hydramatic. When an experienced tech opened it up, it was found to need hard parts too. The rebuild was $2500.00 & the trans had to go to North New Jersey where there was some one who knew how to work on the Roto trans. Best wishes on your repair.
Tony
PS. If the leak is not major, it might be better to leave it alone & check and refill the trans periodically. _________________ |
