Hey All,

I'm new to this site and new to this old of a vehicle but so far I love it.

I just picked up a '54 Chieftain Deluxe, all original except the paint and 12v conversion (badly done).

I plan on building it into a nice cruiser but still using the original drive trainer which seems to be in great shape.

I've been doing some research on the car and it seems to be a strange bird,
My understanding is that the series 25 cars only had I-6's in them????

well my car is a series 25 (by the cowl tag) but it has a numbers matching I-8 in it. I guess it's possible that the cowl tag got changed but all the other info on the tag matches the car so I doubt it, and judging by the overall condition, it's pretty much untouched mechanically.

does anyone have any insight on the ID of the car ??

thanks for having me onboard

The Chieftains were offered in 6- and 8-cylinders.

The "25" for the series is for Chieftain. "26" was the only other series: Star Chief. It is the number/letter group after the "25" that indicates the body style. For example, if you car is a 2-door sedan Chieftain Deluxe 8-cylinder, it would be a 2511W(D) by body style designation. That should all be on your cowl tag.

You do know that the "I" stands for "Inline" right? Sort of like the "V" indicates the cylinder layout in V-style engines.

thanks for the insight Larry,

I was basing my statement on the factory service manual I have for the car, it made it appear that all 25 series chieftains were I-6's.

not true as it turns out.

thanks again.
