I am unable to find the VIN on my 38 Pontiac 26DA.

After removing the battery, I looked on top of the drivers side frame, from the body mount forward with no luck.

Your help will be appreciated!

Henry

On those early Pontiacs, the VIN was stamped on the top of the frame right near (ahead of) the steering box. You might need to wire brush it, but nothing more aggressive as you don't want to harm it.

Thanks.

I removed the battery & tray, and thouroughly cleaned the top of the frame from the firewall to well past (forward of) the steering gear.

I can't find the number, or even a faint sign it was once there.

Is it possible the VIN is elsewhere? The described VIN location would place it under the battery, which I understand moved to the left frame location in 38.

You are correct on the new battery location for 1938, but they still say that the VIN is on that side just ahead of the steering box. That is where it is supposed to be for 1936-'38.

I wonder if your '38 might be stamped where they started stamping the 1939s. They state on the front crossmember behind the radiator. I remember my 1940 supposedly having a tag on the front crossmember... but I never found it. I believe it was also stamped on the frame near the firewall. It was a long time ago, but I never had a problem finding a number and registering the car. As a mater of fact, I had the police verify the number down in Kentucky before I headed back to Wisconsin with it.

Have you checked on the right frame top? It might be wrth a try. Even the Hollander Interchange Manuals start top of left frame. I'd check the other places too. Who knows what they did back then, especially between the different plants.

Please let us know what you find... and we do hope you find something!
