Hey all,a big hello from the frozen north country up here in Canada.I have been working on a 54 Pontiac laurentian for a few years and got it up and roadworthy for last summer.I managed to put a good 700 miles on her with no major issues. Not sure how many are familiar with the north of the border Canadian built Pontiacs.Mine is a 54 laurentian 4 door with its original 239 flathead six and powerglide auto transmission. It is a very early production car at number 13 of the line in 54 and only body serial 2 for the laurentians. This winters project is another Canadian Pontiac but this time a 1949 Pontiac fleetleader special 6 notchback sedan.Hopefully up and running by the early spring.Again sporting the good old 239 flathead but this one is a 3 speed standard. Finally when those two are all done I plan on doing a 1959 stratchief station wagon, with a 283 and automatic in it.

You have the Pontiac Bug bad. Obviously your Canadian cold weather flu shots didn't help any.

Having had a couple U.S. '54s I can relate to them, but am not too aware of how different your Canadian models were than ours.

I would love to feature your Canadian Pontiacs (and your "bug" story) in our On-Line Magazine monthly feature. As with all who share their Pontiac story, I gladly will give a free two years of PontiacRegistry.com membership. It is easy to do right by e-mail.... heaven knows I ain't leaving Florida to come to Canada to shoot pictures right about now! Would be fun though to see some snow again.

Let me know, I bet everyone would enjoy your cars and story.

I've only seen a few Canadian Pontiacs in person here in southern New England. Besides the use of Chevrolet engines, what are the major differences?

Good luck with your winter project!

We'll i'll tell you what I know or have discovered in the last 4 years of working on the 54 laurentian. All the Canadian models were assembled in Oshawa, ontario. There are a few different models in 54 such as a pathfinder, pathfinder deluxe and the laurentian being the top of the line. Most americans refer to them as cheviacs or pontelets.Basically my car from the firewall back is a 54 chevy, same body, same taillights in fact when I ordered all my replacement rockers, rear quarters etc I ordered them for a 54 chevy. So that means no rear humps on the fenders like the chieftons, different taillights, different rear glass, different(shorter)trunk. So if you tried to use your rear teunk trim from a chieftain on a Canadian car you would find its too long. From the firewall forward it is all Canadian pontiac,Different fenders, etc.Under the hood in the us you would have gotten a 265?inline six.Up here we got the 239 flathead six.So just about everything is on the opposite side from an American Pontiac. Now 54 was supposed to be the first year of the hydramatic transmission. But due to a fire in the plant that produced those transmission we got the cast iron two speed powerglide instead. My car is a fairly rare color combo i'm told.Pueblo tan with a sunsand beige roof.Thats another thing that is sometimes hard to decipher as our Canadian cars have different paint names and codes than the u.s models.Thankfully we can still order gm history reports on these cars from gm of Canada. The information gets a little bit vague as you go further back but generally they can tell you models, production numbers and dates, mptor and transmissions installed.Unfortunetly for the fifties and back cars they don't have where the car was sold or shipped to anymore.I have only seen a few 54 chevys in my color and one other laurentian. But his interior is black and mine is the matching tan with orange carpet)ask me how fun that was to find). As for the 49 I am still gathering info on it as I just acquired it about 4 months ago.It is called a fleetleader special six notchback coupe up here.Very similar to an American chevy fleetline of the same year. But mine being a notchback not a slantback. So far I believe there to be about 2700 built that year, mine being one of the last 50 off the line at 2662 built very late December 1949.I will try and post some production figures for both soon and confirm some build date. Also I will try and post some pics as soon as I figure out how to downsize mine as they keep coming up too big(sorry guys not a computer techie at all).I did have a third 54 Pontiac that came as a parts car with my 54 4 door.It is one of the extremely rare 54 Pontiac sedan deliveries.Less than 500 produced and only about 100 known to still exsist according to the Canadian registry.Un fortunetly it is extremely far gone but there is hope as I may have located a second completely stock, untouched one.

The Chevy-Pontiacs are really cool for us down yonder. They look like customized Pontiacs to us.

You flathead six-cylinder is the same one we had in the U.S. from 1941 through 1954 (239.2 cu. in.). We never saw an OHV engine until the V-8 in '55. Years later there were OHV six-cylinders available long after the days of the flathead ended.

The '54 Sedan Delivery is rare indeed. Sure hope you can grab the additional one. What a line-up of neat old Pontiacs you will have.

Check in our On-Line Magazine. we have quite a few articles about Canadian Pontiacs there.

Keep us posted on your progress.

5449 , your lucky in the fact that you can go to Pontiac or GM of Canada to get your info on your car. Down here we have to pay an arm & leg to a private person to get the info on our cars. Pontiac didn't keep good enough records & also have someone willing or smart enough to get that info from them. When I say an arm & leg I mean it to. To get the info from PHS it's very close to $ 100.00 now. Sometimes , depending on the cars you may only end up with 3-4 pages of info for that money to. Sound like you have a nice car , how about some pic's.??
