Please be careful when dealing with people contacting you from the parts wanted ads.

I placed a recent post looking for parts after rejoining POCI. I did not receive any replies thru this site except for some helpful suggestions where to look.

Soon after, I received a personal email out of the blue from a fellow in one of the southern states. The email was suspect due to the format: personsname[bulk]@gmail.com. The bulk in square brackets I never see anyone commonly use.

Nevertheless the person said he miraculously had the parts I needed and they were perfect. For $ (twice the true value) he would ship them anywhere. I replied with a shipping address so he could check if the shipping would be enough. Canadians pay duty and broker charges for UPS here. Knowing he was asking a bit much for the parts, I decided to play along.

The person then send me his spouses' address and name asking me to send money by Western Union made out to the spouse at her address.
I googled the address and it ends up being a government office in his state with matching zipcode.
I asked for some pictures and then there was silence. A few days later he emails me again with a tiny picture of the car, one can hardly make out too many details as to the condition of the parts, the car or much else. I said I would send funds the next day as I couldn't do it online on the weekend. He got impatient and sent me another email if I arranged payment yet, but this time slipped in a business name bearing the same zip code of the government office but it was in a neighboring town. There is no such auto shop business in the town that I could find. Got more suspicious and checked his name and found him in the 'online scamming' section of other car websites where he collects payment and you never hear from him again.

I was hoping that my suspicions were unfounded. Unless you know someone personally who is selling, or if the information asked for by a purchaser is met, never trust online purchases from someone you cannot verify as real. I was disappointed and wrote him I would pass on the parts.
He never disputed or complained. I wonder because there are not a lot of takers for someone parting a Grand Am. There is a small bunch of people looking for stuff off those cars. If the person I dealt with is truly a real guy I would hate to paint him in a bad light if you know who you are.
To everyone else out there, just be careful.

Please don't be afraid to post his name if you have all that kind of proof as it will save a lot of guys a big heart ache if they get caught up in that same thing. If he is for real you'll know it right away, but if you post his name & where he's from you may be surprised at how many others may have delt with him also. This is the way we keep ahead of these guys. It will save a lot of people there hard earned money avoiding a scam artist.
