Gas mileage can be boosted by running synthetic oil in engine, trans, power steering, rear end and synthetic grease on wheel bearings. Parts will last at least twice as long. Pontiac made a 2:56 rear end. That rear end will take you from 20 MPG to 30 MPG. Mileage checks are to be run at 65 MPH summer only. The spark plugs I have run for decades are NGK R, BR8EQ 14. They are 4 ground electrodes and are cleaned and gapped easily. They are one inch of threads and fit 67-69. I have two sets with over 150,000 miles on each set. A good plug with one half inch of threads is NGK BUHX. No R designation so probably not a resistor plug. It is a ring of fire plug or marine plug and will boost compression slightly. There are E3 plugs that are better than single fire but they do not test them against quad fireplugs. You can make your own split fire plugs by bending the ground out flat and splitting it with a very narrow chisel and spreading the two ground straps then bending them back over the center electrode. This is an option on politically correct, stock number plugs. Overdrive trans will take you from 30 MPG to 35 MPG. Advance timing five more degrees to 10 Degrees before top dead center. A T5 Borg Warner 5 speed out of a 82 to 83 V8 Camero has first gear of 3:55 and overdrive that starts at 37% and 4 overdrive gear sets stepping up to 72%, Which is the same as a 2:56 rear end and a 37% overdrive. 6 Cyl. Camero and Cheve S10 Hase a 4:06 First gear and a 35% Overdrive, if 25 and 61 Jeep overdrive gears are used. Stock Ford front nose is all aluminum and can be turned down to run GM throw out bearing and fit hole in GM bell housing. Non World Class has mechanical speedometer and will have BASIC on the shift fork top cover as is the year. World class has electric speedometer. T5's are about 20 Pounds lighter than Saginaw 4 Speed and shifter. A 200R auto has overdrive. A 700R has overdrive and a torque converter lock but is 3 inches longer than stock as is a T5 which is 24". Weight is a factor as is tire inflation which I run at 35 pounds. If you have good front end parts tell alignment guy to cut the toe in in half. When I buy aluminum parts I ask myself how many miles will I have to drive to pay for this 10.5 Pound aluminum fly wheel that costs $300.00. I have an aluminum drive line with a light weight Cheve S 10 yolk and Cheve U Joint. Cheve U joints are one size smaller. Rear U joint is Cheve to Pontiac adapter u joint because I now have a 2:41 Cheve rear end out of a 85 ElCamino. Car is a 66 ElCamino. S10 yolks are much lighter than Pontiac yolks and can run a Cheve to Pontiac adapter U joint. Mileage checks are run with the tail gate down and windows up because I have evaporative coolers built in to the floor vents behind the kick panels. Previous mileage checks were run with the 2:56 Pontiac rear end and an OHC6 250 That was borred +.125" over to 266 cubes. Hit 39 MPG. 2:41 Is a lighter rear end, but no mileage checks yet. Current engine is stroked 3 cubes to 269. I also have a one barrel cam now and I took the power steering off. The engine is assembled with aluminum bolts, nuts, washers and all thread taking off about 20 pounds. They are coarse thread only and are not used on intake and exhaust. Bell housing and trans are aluminum bolts and trans is assembled with aluminum bolts with PVC pipe plugs for drain plugs. I have made many small parts out of aluminum and have taken off about 200 Pounds off of the 66 ElCamino. Car weighs about 3,000 pounds.
Under the carb, primaries only, I have a stainless steel screen that breaks up the gas drops and reduces gas knock. Primaries of .071 were replaced with .068 on the 66 230 Sprint four barrel. The higher the compression, the better the mileage. If you have a 230 4 Barrel head on a 250 with a Felpro head gasket the compression is about 11.5 to one. If you have to run aviation gas, carb is too lean, dist advance problems, or you have a hot, leaky exhaust valve. I bet it does not knock when it is cold. Remember when there were factory compression ratios of 11 to one? There are tires that are touted to get better mileage. Next tire purchase I will get them. This scratches the surface.
