Need some help please Sad
We are not new to classic cars but we are new to our 1935 Pontiac that we recently purchased and are restoring. I have the '35 shop manual and owners manual and they both mention the air cleaner which is suppose to have oil in to help catch the dirt particles when the air is pulled in. The books indicates to pull out the "element" and clean it with gasoline or kerosene. The air cleaner on our Pontiac has a wing nut for the top cover and then underneath this cover is a 4" round pad that reminds me of steel wool. I don't think this is the "element" that is mentioned in my manuals but rather the silencer....is this correct??? Also, I see no where to take apart anything else on this air cleaner to add oil or any other type of filter (element) that can be removed. Can someone please explain what the books are referring to as the "element" and is it the same thing or something else entirely than the 4"round steel wool that I have on mine. The car appears to run fine with this air cleaner but should I try to find one that is a true oil bath? Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!
