Hi everyone! I'm brand new here and in need of some advice. What is the correct length of the dipstick and tube for a 1965 389 ? Thanks in advance. George.

That's sort of an odd question. Are you missing the correct tube and thinking of using a different one, but need to know length to look correct?

If so, I would just look around to the many aftermarket places and see if they sell the actual correct one. It is important to have the correct one as many times these tubes have the proper twists and turns needed to get an accurate oil level reading (plus the length, of course).

Just a quick look shows that Summit has the tube and stick for only a few dollars. Check: http://www.summitracing.com/search/brand/spectre-performance/part-type/engine-oil-dipsticks/make/pontiac/dipstick-tube-included/yes

There are a lot more places if you do a Google search.

Thanks for the reply. When the 389 engine was rebuilt, the dipstick didn't show any oil even though 5 quarts were added. It appears, based on other engines I've seen, to be the proper tube and I ordered another stock dipstick. approx 19", and it still didn't show any oil. I even overfilled it to see, and nothing showed, so I drained it and went back to 5 quarts, but I'm running blind now. Could there be some kind of baffle disrupting the tube and dipstick ? Obviously I'm concerned. Thanks again.

Go to our On-Line Reference Manual Library and click on the 1966 Service manual, then Section 6 (engine). See on page 27 and 29 photos of the dip stick tube inside the oil pan. I have attached a screen shot of page 29 below also (click on it to enlarge).

I am wondering if the lower tube section was left out thus causing the dip stick to simply "glide" across the oil baffler pan and not stick down into the oil.

I ran into a Chevy II working at a gas station many years ago that would not register the oil. Being young and not so smart, I put in about 12 quarts of oil thinking perhaps it had an over sized oil pan (right?!?). Well, it came back the next day blowing oil all over the place. Seems (according to the boss), some of those old Chevy sixes would slid the dip stick over and around the cam, or some such thing.

Let us know what you discover.

Thanks for that info. The dipstick does seem to hang up, and needs fiddling with to finally go all the way in. Will try recommendation, and get back to you. ps, Had a great time up at the Warwick Celebration, and will definitely return in 2 yrs.

Our third "Pontiac Celebration" was a huge success... thanks to all the great Pontiac lovers (like you) who come and support the event.

Be sure to read all about the show in our On-Line Magazine. Also click on the ad on the home page and follow it through this show and the past two. We have raised a lot of money for our two children's cancer charities.

Thanks for your support!

At a recent show I met 2 other GTO guys. 1 guy had a 65, like mine with a short tube and a dipstick about 19" in long, but the other guy, with a beautiful 64, his dipstick was about 26 ins long. Neither had A/C. He came over and it fit my engine and tube perfectly and gave an accurate reading!! Eureka! But I can't find a 26in length oil dipstick with either Ames or OPGI or Ebay! Any suggestions? Thanks in advance! George.

Did the fellow's 19" dipstick read his oil level correctly? His outside tube was the same as yours too? If his worked, why doesn't yours....?

Did the '64 have the same outside tube length as yours? It is hard to think that it would take 7" more to read your oil level correctly.

I find no listings for such long dipstick. Most replacement dipsticks also come with the tubes also (both inside and out), and we know you don't want to go that route.

A few places I've read have similar problems and they seem to find some dipstick that work, they cut it to length, and file a full mark on the stick. If you can find a long enough dipstick, I guess that would be the route to go. Might be time to go junkyarding. Can you rework a transmission dipstick. They are pretty long.

Please keep us posted.

The guy with the 19" dipstick's engine had a short tube on his 65. shorter than mine! The 1964 GTO had the same length tube as mine and the 26" (approx) Dipstick worked great! I was actually quart low! Neither car had A/C. I'm surprised that Ames, OPGI and Ebay don't list the LENGTH of all the dipstick's they say will fit all Pontiac engines. Any way thanks for all your responses, I'll just have to keep searching. Maybe I'll contact someone who rebuilds 389's and go from there. Thanks again, this site is great, and as I have always thought, car guys are some of the nicest people you'd ever want to meet! Oh, and Happy Birthday GTO! George.

Go to our Tech Adviser section and drop a note to Bruce Fulper about this situation. He has lots of Pontiac V8 experience and may be able to help.
