Hey, sorry I'm new here but I have a question on id for a super duty. This old woman I know just pulled a 62 out of her garage and is going to sell it. When I popped the hood it has 2 4 barrel Carter's on it, wow what does she have, is there any way to tell for sure. I will take a few pics and post them.

A '62 GP SD would be rare indeed. Please send whatever you can find. The main info to start with would be engine numbers. Send the numbers on the right side of block just below the head split and shorter number/letter combo at front hear water pump. We have some articles on block identifications in our On-Line Magazine you might wish to check.

The 2 4-bbls sure sounds intriguing, and we will help you figure out what it is. If a SD, wow, that would be a rare and valuable one.

Larry, thanks for the input, I checked the code today and it's a 16k. Not what I was hoping for but it's still a great car.

I'm corn-fused.

Everywhere I check the block date code is supposed to start with a letter. A "K" would be the first digit indicating November. The subsequent numbers are month and year.

Then the next two digits should be the day, with early days starting with a "0". Then the last digit should be the last number of the year, such as 1966 being a "6."

Pete McCarthy's engine book states that "early blocks omit the first digits of monthly days..." but he doesn't say "what" early blocks.

So using that, if yours is actually a "K16" that would mean November 1st (or possibly 11th, 21st, or 31st) and 1966.

Can you clarify where you found the "16K"?

Have you also checked the block back by the distributor pad for the dates?

Larry, there are a bunch of numbers on the front of the right head. 62K3132 is one of the numbers which corresponds with the vin I think, then there is a 46173 and a 16K.

Are you referring to numbers on the block (not head), just below the head-to-block split?

I find some references to the numbers being on the head, but I don't think that is accurate.

If the top number is a stamped-in number, then it is the ID and may match the VIN. Most books say "mid-60s" for the numbers being the same as the VIN. Some of this stuff is really vague.

The bottom numbers should be the production numbers, but I'll have to figure out what they mean.

Have you checked the two-digit letter codes on the block at the front right side near the water pump?

PostPosted: Thu May 22, 2014 3:20 pm    Post subject: MORE NEWS ON ENGINE ID Reply with quote

I am in the process of preparing the 1962 Pontiac Service Manual for posting in our On-Line Reference Library, and have found some information that may help ID your engine. It may, in fact, be a '62 engine.

In the "Engine Identification Chart" there is an engine identification letter code that is, in fact, stamped below the production numbers on the right, front side of the block... sure enough, there is a "16K."

Unfortunately it does not match to the Grand Prix. It shows as being "Spt. Equip.- 23". The "23" is the model application. The Grand Prix is "29."

Now, if you look closer and find it to actually be a "16KJ" then you would be in luck. Not a SD but a "Std.- 29." At least it would be the GP engine.

Both engines were 4-bbl. engines with long exhaust manifolds.

See the page attached below. Hope this helps a bit more.
