I have a 1963 Catalina that I am restoring. It belonged to my mom that passed away last year.
I am having a problem with the fan not blowing when the heat button is engaged, however it will run when the defrost button is engaged. When the off button is engaged this is suppose to disconnect (open the circuit) and disengage the fan.
There are 4 fan settings; Lo, 2, 3 and High. To me that would mean that the fan runs unless the off button is engaged. Since the off switch is clean and functioning then there is a problem somewhere else.

Can some one help me to figure out why the fan speed control will not function in the heat position?

OK, let's take a look at this.

First, have you ever noticed that the defroster position on most all cars seems to have a mind of its own? Well, it sort of does, and that is probably because of the safety element involved in keeping a windshield clean and visibility good... as in seeing where you are going!

It is not surprising that a blower motor will still run in the defrost position when it doesn't work in the heater setting because it has a different circuit path. As a matter of fact, with the defroster button pushed, the defroster (fan) will run even if the blower switch is in the "OFF" and "LO" positions on many cars, probably yours too. That is because the defroster circuit actually runs off of a separate switch and not (only) through the heater fan position switch.

So, where are we going? The defroster will run at the medium speed even with the blower switch off. It will also run on high with the blower switch on high, but on any other blower positions (low and off) it will still run on medium. Have you tried pushing the defroster button (which you say makes the blower work), and then setting the blower switch to high? Does it speed up? I'm guessing not from how you describe the problem.

Corn-fusing, huh? So, my guess at this point (unless the test I mention above actually sped up the blower motor) is that you have a bad blower switch.

Just for grins though, before completely blaming the blower switch, check all your contacts on the resistor block. And even remove it and see that all the resistor coils are intact. An ohm check across them will tell for certain. The resister block should be located somewhere in the heater plenum, usually under the hood on the firewall area, and be kinda oval shaped held on with two small screws. Rarely will all three of the resistor coils be burned out, but I have seen stranger things.

Please keep us informed on your troubleshooting, and good luck with your '63 Catalina. You have a great old Pontiac there and a super special one too.
