1985 IMSA Grand Am

New for '85 Grand Am Goes Racing!

By 1985 we were midway into the decade that perhaps many Pontiac lovers would like to forget about. By this time we had seen "1000s", "2000s", "6000s"; we had seen Front Wheel Drive begin to replace the beloved push-from-the-back drive (like God had intended), horsepower could be counted on two hands, and our favorite big Pontiacs were approaching micro status. But, you know, we got through it, and surprisingly (as always happens), these cars are even showing up in the hobby circles now. And in the scheme of things they are actually kinda interesting... as seen here in this '85 Grand Am.

The '80s represented some very innovative advances in small engine design and engineering. And as we see, some even made it into the International Motor Sports Association circuit. This Baird and Trivett Racing Grand Am probably carried the available 6-cylinder, but could have even had a hopped up 4-cylinder (an "Iron Duke" perhaps?). Wouldn't it be neat today to find this car or at least some of the drivetrain? Bet you could scare the livin' "you-know-what" out of a few Hondas on the street!

So, with some of this in mind, let's see where the hobby goes now that the Pontiacs of the '80s are 20-25 years old.
