Formula D Racing [DRIFTING] Growing in Excitement!
January 10, 2006
While a new race sport in the United States, "Drifting" has been a very exciting motorsport in Japan for over 20 years. The object of Drifting is for the driver to maneuver his vehicle into well-executed, controlled slides at high speeds through a marked course. While this may sound somewhat like simply racing around pylons, which the sports car crowd has been doing for a long time, it is not quite that simple. The competitors are judged on style, not just speed or elapsed time. Three main critera (racing line, drift angle, and speed) are scutinized by the judges and crowd during a tandem run in which two drivers go head to head through a course. Drifting has become as much of an art form as motorsport.
The first and only officially sanctioned (by the SCCA) Drift series is the "Need for Speed Formula Drift Champion Series." It is not surprising that Bridgestone Tire would be one of the main sponsors of this series - they do go through tires! Bridgestone is one the leading tires of choice in the drifting events in the US. The 2006 Formula D Need for Speed Series will be sponsored in part by Bridgestone Tire, as well as Falken and Toyo.
Watch for more on the growing drifting motorsport. And watch for the GTO- and now the Solstice- as leaders in this new and exciting competition!
