1965 Bonneville

The stock fuel filter bracket on my '65 Bonneville seems to be between the water pump and the timing chain cover. I attempting to remove the bracket I inadvertently backed off the double nutted stud that mounts the timing chain cover to the block (the bracket goes between the 1st nut and the 2nd nut). I am now getting a little coolant leak. I can't get to the 2nd nut which is loose with a socket becaust the bracket in on the stud in front of it. I can't get an open ended wrench to the nut from the top because the space is too small. Does anyone know if I can get to the nut by pulling the alternator off and going in from the side or do I have to take the water pump itself off? I can't believe GM would design it that way but that bracket on a double nutted stud is tough. Thanks.
